What is Going On?
In the middle of the night, I woke up with a great sense of inner awareness and the sudden realization that beyond the physical manifestation of the pandemic – the worry, the concern, the misinformation and politicization – a big mental/emotional and visual field was being generated that was slowly engulfing everything. A major thought form was creating massive anxiety.
I thought it might be time to reframe some things, individually and collectively. Let’s go back to basics.
Questions for the Times
I often share with my coaching clients that I have found life is easier when we reduce our curiosity to two questions:
- What is going on?
- What can I do about it?
In other words, inquiries that do not lend themselves to actions are usually circular and a waste of energy and resources. Typical of these circular inquiries are:
- Who is to blame?
- Why is this happening to us or me?
- Who should be punished?
- How much and for how long?
- Are we all going to die?
So, let’s look at the situation from the point of view of these two productive questions. First, from a global perspective and then from the very personal level of how to protect ourselves.
In Our Thoughts and Prayers, Let’s Focus on the Whole
Because this situation is affecting the whole planet, this could be an opportunity to reflect on our oneness and the notions that our divisions of race, ethnicity and nationality are very artificial. When it comes to disasters and pandemics we are all in this together.
So, it is a good time to focus on compassion, solidarity and service. Be open to give and also be open to receive. Remember that it is appropriate to ask for assistance when needed. Leave to the politicians the task of figuring out how they are going to handle the global economics and social crisis. Let the medical world deal with the medical response.
This is a Time to Focus on Family and Creative Social Interaction
Last week my wife and her family organized a zoom “happy hour” where we played a family game together. They have also set up a zoom book club for the family.
Our weekly exercise class is now also on zoom. How many of your activities, personal or professional, can you switch to a format which is safe? Please be creative and use this time to increase meaningful social interaction.
If you have older parents or relatives, it may be a time to get them a tablet and teach them how to stay connected with the rest of the family.
Take Care of Yourself so that You Can Assist in Taking Care of Others
This is a time when taking care of ourselves is the best thing we can do for our community as a whole. We have all been bombarded with the basics of hand washing and social distancing, but there are a few more things we can do and new information is coming in everyday from very reliable sources.
On the Mental/Emotional Levels
Do not get caught in the frenzy of the news. If you are not already doing this, it is the time to cultivate your inner life through prayer, meditation, mindfulness, contemplation, inspirational reading, listening to music and dancing – in other words, anything proactive and uplifting. Find opportunities to interact in creative ways and keep close contact with your family and friends.
One simple way to maintain mental/emotional balance is to breathe in for four counts and exhale for eight counts. This switches your brain from the fight/flight response to health and regeneration. If you place your focus on something inspiring at the same time it will not only restore balance but also lift your Spirit.
On the Physical Level
- Physical exercise and deep breathing are critical in maintaining optimal health.
- Proper nutrition would come next. It is tempting when we are stressed to comfort ourselves with sweets and alcohol. Be moderate – it will improve your physical resilience.
What is COVID 19 and How Does it Affect Our Bodies?
It is a highly contagious virus that is propagated by tiny droplets projected in the air by people who have already been contaminated. These tiny particles can be in the air and attach to our own respiratory system or attach to surfaces. They can stay active on surfaces for up to 78 hours.
Thus, the importance of washing our hands frequently, avoiding touching our faces and surfaces in public places. Many of the people carrying the virus are asymptomatic and are not aware of the risk they cause to others. It is left to us to best protect ourselves.
Once the virus enters nasal passages, eyes or mouths it attaches to mucus membranes and starts its reproductive cycle. A common symptom at this stage is a decrease in our ability to smell and taste.
Believe it or not, humming can interfere in the reproductive process by stimulating Nitric Oxide, which may block the virus. However, once the virus moves from our nose to our throat and lungs it stimulates a very active immune response called a “cytokine storm.”
- Our best approach is to avoid exposure in the first place by being aware of and implementing basic protection and social distancing.
- Second, boost our general immunity.
- Third block the viral reproduction.
- Fourth, inhibit the cytokine storm that can lead to pneumonia.
So, stay safe, and now let’s examine the three other responses listed above.
Immune Protection

Vitamins D and C are effective support for our immunity without increasing the risk of enhancing the cytokine storm. Unless your Vitamin D level is above 80 you can take 5,000 IU daily. Research in China suggests a preventative level of Vitamin C of 1,000 mg twice a day or more, if you can tolerate it without diarrhea. A treatment level would be more like 10,000 mg to 20,000 mg. This would be best delivered intravenously but you could also take 1,000 mg every hour without worrying about the diarrhea. We personally recommend a Liposomal Vitamin C with R Lipoic Acid from Quicksilver because it absorbs better and is less likely to cause diarrhea.
Another product that we recommend is Del Immune which is a combination of earth organisms designed to balance the large intestine. The large intestine is the first line of defense of the body.
Fighting the Virus
Research in Canada indicates that Quercetin is a good way to block the viral reproduction in the lungs. Quercetin is a bioflavanoid available at every health food store. A level of 500 mg twice a day is recommended.
Inhibiting the Cytokine Storm
Two herbal products have potential to down-regulate excessive immune response, which happens when the virus moves to the lungs.
- Adrographis is the main ingredient in the AntiVir II formula, which we mentioned in our newsletter last week and which we still recommend.
- The AnitVir II has been back ordered but we are getting a replacement item in next week that tests just as positive called Andrographis Extract by Puritan’s Pride.
- Curcumin seems to serve a similar purpose. Our suggestion is a highly absorbable form of curcumin called Curapro; I recommend one capsule of 750 mg twice daily.
Other Resources
Recent research indicates that Covid-19 might be sensitive to products used for malaria. The medical product is called Chorohydroquinone and is under investigation by the FDA. Needless to say it is not going to be available for a long time and then only through prescription.
- An herbal supplement called Artenisa Annua or wormwood has been used to fight malaria for a long time.
- The active ingredient in Olive Leaf Extract seems to also be active against that virus.
- A combination product called MicroDefense combines these two products and would be a great addition to a preventive approach. The recommended dosage would be 2 to 3 capsules twice a day with meals.

- Gelsenium If symptomatic with fever, chills and body aches; good to take with ANY kind of flu, fever, chills, aches
- Lycopodium Clavatum for lung support
- Ferrum Phos for blocking viral reproduction. This remedy can be used at the first sign of infection or as a prevention and is specifically indicated for upper respiratory conditions
