The Present Context is Unique

Recent articles in the general press mentioned that many people with Covid-19 suf Most of us are dealing with a multiplicity of life challenges hitting us simultaneously:

  • The COVID-19 situation and all the confusing and often conflicting information coming at us from multiple sources regarding the way to protect ourselves and others.
  • The presidential election and the animosity and fear mongering accompanying it.
  • The sustained excessive heat and the fires that disrupt our lives or the lives of our loved ones and the dramatic impact on our lungs that can increase the COVID risk.
  • Financial challenges regarding employment, lodging and family challenges regarding school, universities and management of health-challenged people at a time where healthcare institutions are closed to visitors.

Those are some of the common issues. I am sure many of you have specific situations impacting your health and wellbeing at this time.

Overwhelm is Common These Days

A little interaction in my own marriage recently showed me how triggered we are and how challenging it is to keep our cool, stay centered and loving. For many of us right now, even a tiny new challenge can become the straw that breaks the camel’s back. So, what can we do?

  • When we change our focus we change our experience.
  • Realize our brains have been programmed for survival which can lead to reactivity, and a fight/flight response to circumstances.
  • Remember that our hearts are designed to reconnect us to the soul (Spirit) the source of our authentic empowerment.

How Can We Switch from Contraction to Expansion

There are five thoughts, actions or images that help us reconnect to our Spiritual Hearts. We call them the Five Symbols of Inner Peace:

  1. Nature
  2. Little babies
  3. Pets
  4. Music
  5. Touching or focusing on the center of our chest

Not all of these work for everybody but I have never found anybody who did not respond to at least one of them. So, close your eyes and bring one symbol at a time into your mind and observe what happens inside of you. Some people describe the result as peaceful, neutral, quiet, calm. Chose the symbol that works the best for you and every time something disturbs you practice using your symbol or symbols to bring you back into inner balance.

Look at Your Life as a Flow, Not and Overwhelming Pile

  • Move from looking at everything that disturbs you to one single issue. Our brain is not good at multitasking, so change your focus from the whole to one single challenge.
  • Use your symbol to reconnect to inner peace.
  • Identify one action step you can take that could improve the situation.
  • Take the step and acknowledge yourself for your courage and identify the next step.

Practice Makes Perfect

Look at the next issue and repeat the same process. From constructive step to the next constructive step, you will dig yourself out of the hole and regain control over your life. Also, never be too proud to ask for assistance. We are social beings and we are much more effective when we help each other. Healthy people love to be of service, so you are not imposing – you are giving them the opportunity to serve. Service is the highest form of expression on the planet and produces a lot of internal joy.
